Ukrainian Dance Instructor for Zirka Calmar

Alberta Zirka Ukrainian Performers is a vibrant Ukrainian Dance group operating in the community of Calmar, approximately 40 minutes south west of Edmonton. In operation since 1976, the organization is proud to have had over 750 dancers from Calmar and surrounding communities develop and share their talent and passion for Ukrainian Dance though Zirka. Today, Zirka remains committed to promoting and preserving Ukrainian culture and dance in Alberta; inspiring dancers and participating in the Ukrainian community. We are seeking a passionate, creative, and experienced Ukrainian Dance instructor to join our team for the 2020/2021 Dance Season.


1. Instructional Duties

  • Structure and teach dance classes following a recognized syllabus
  • Follow all teaching outlines and guidelines set out in the handbook
  • Teach Ukrainian dance from a strong, traditional foundation to students at a variety of levels
  • Choreograph appropriate, interesting and innovative dance choreography which both challenges dancers and continues to grow the reputation of Zirka; aligning regional music, costumes and steps, and preserving cultural and traditional integrity
  • Maintain appropriate instructor/student relationships
  • Attend community performances, events, and festivals
  • Record and report on student attendance
  • Communicate with parents of students as required and take notes of conversations with parents
  • Any other duties as may reasonably be required and that fall within the scope and range of the position

2. Non Instructional Duties

  • Assist with students with photo days, dance-a-thon and other activities as required
  • Attend/supervise rehearsals, performances, and festivals
  • Attend year end performance rehearsals and performances
  • Communicate with executive board members as required
  • Attend annual zabava (Family Social)
  • Attend board meetings as required

Qualifications & Key Competencies:

  • Minimum 3 years previous Ukrainian Dance instruction and choreography experience
  • Experience teaching male students at a wide range of levels
  • Extensive knowledge of male dance steps, choreography, tricks etc.
  • Knowledge of Ukrainian culture/folklore and various styles/music/lexicon of Ukrainian dance
  • Knowledge of regional accuracy when selecting music and costumes
  • Former professional dance training and/or performance experience is an asset
  • Proactive and flexible attitude and approach; willing to be involved in all areas of Zirka’s initiatives
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to build good supportive relationships with students, colleagues, board members, and the wider dance community
  • Availability to instruct on evenings and weekends, and to travel within Canada as required
  • Successful completion of  criminal record check with vulnerable sector search
  • General knowledge of office equipment including a computer, scanner, email
